Title
Blackbull, Sioux and Mrs. Fast-Horse, Sioux, Rosebud Reservation, South Dakota

1916
Description
Tuell was a self-taught photographer who lived with her schoolteacher husband on Cheyenne and Sioux reservations in Montana and South Dakota. She taught home economics at reservation schools and in her spare time documented the social customs and ceremonies of her Indian subjects. Although her more candid photographs have the look of contrived tableau, Tuell's portraiture is direct and honest, as the photographs here demonstrate.
